Vasumathi Badrinathan
Translator, Academician & Musician
During this residency, I shall work on English-Hindi translation of medieval and Renaissance French women poets; a world hitherto hidden from Indian readers. This fits organically into my ongoing work rooted in intercultural dialogue, and the transmission of literary and artistic traditions. While in France, I hope to have conversations, shared experiences, collaborative thinking, and a renewed exposure to different translational processes which could become catalysts for new thought and creation. Finally, I see this residency as a space of quiet reflection, creation and transformation.
Dr. Vasumathi Badrinathan is Professor in the Department of French Studies at Banaras Hindu University, specialising in foreign language teaching and learning. Dr. Badrinathan received her PhD from the University of Lille 3, France. A recipient of the Fulbright and Erasmus Mundus fellowships, Dr. Badrinathan is a pioneering trainer for French educators in India and a literary translator. Her notable work includes the French translation of Andal’s Tiruppavai (Éditions Banyan, Paris, 2019). Dr. Badrinathan was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the Government of France for her outstanding contribution to French language and culture. Dr. Vasumathi Badrinathan is also an accomplished Carnatic classical vocalist with performances in India and abroad.
